 WHAT IS A 2 POT RETIREMENT SYSTEM? South Africa will see a major change in the retirement regime starting on the 1st of September 2024. It is a system which has come to be known as a two pot system, although it is actually a 3 pot system. This system comes into existence as a result of the intensive campaigning by the organized labour i.e Trade Unions mainly represented at the Nedlac platform. The major reason for this campaign which has ultimately resulted into the new retirement regime is to provide relief, financial relief to workers who are going through financial strain. The call to allow the workers to tap into their provident/pension funds started as far back as 2017, however, it intensified in 2020 during the Covid 19 Lockdown when the country came to a standstill and there was not much economic activity which meant a loss of earnings for the workers. July is known worldwide as Mandela Month emanating from the 18th of July being named the International Mandela Day by the United Nations as part of celebrating Madiba's birthday. The day started with the late statemen's instruction that people should dedicate 67 minutes of their time to public service, doing good for society on the 18th of July every year as a way of celebrating his birthday. The 67 minutes is a representation of the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to the service of society. Later on the United Nation adopted this day and named it the International Mandela Day. Last week Sunday we were woken up the news and a video of one Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi an Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) leader and a Member of Parliament attacking President Jacob Zuma. This shocked and angered many within the Black progressive camp, the shock and anger was informed by the fact that the Economic Freedom Fighters which is the third largest political party in South Africa and has been selling itself as a vehicle for carrying the hopes and inspirations of the downtrodden masses(Black people) is now working hand in glove with the White Monopoly Capital in dismantling any attempts at uniting Black people. President Jacob Zuma with his establishment of the UMkhonto WeSizwe Political Party has effectively provided all Black progressive formations with a platform to unite and work on a minimum program for the total liberation of the Natives as the 1994 dispensation has dismally failed to do. What is increasingly becoming clear it is that no political party will amass enough share of votes to attain the 50 plus percent needed to establish a government on its own. This is informed by different polls which have placed the governing African National Congress into the mid 40s at best interms of percentages . This simply means that South Africa is poised for a Coalition government at the National level and some few provinces such as Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape. The previously mentioned provinces are governed by the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance(Western Cape). In Gauteng the ANC scrapped through in the last Provincial elections to be able to govern that province, this is a province which is an economic hub not just of the country but for the continent.       ARE TRADE UNIONS STILL RELEVANT?  Like many countries across the globe South Africa is celebrating the International Workers Day, this day is popularly known as MAYDAY. It is a day which has been set aside as a Public Holiday aimed at celebrating workers and their contribution in building the global economy. It is also a day where workers take stock of the progress made in their pursuit of their struggle in advancing and defending their interests, but not just the interests of those employed but the interests of the entire working class. South Africa is no different in this sense, although the South African situation has its unique features such as the dominant workers federation(Congress of South African Trade Unions) Cosatu being in bed(alliance) with the governing African National Congress(ANC). It was exactly on this day the 27th of April in 1994 when millions of South Africans stood in long queues to cast their votes to usher in the  democratic dispensation . For the Afrikan majority who are the natives of this land it was for the first time that they had a right to elect their own government in their own land, as we know they had been excluded from this exercise by Colonialism\ Apartheid which had always maintained that Black people are subhuman .
