THE IEC CANNOT JUSTIFY EMPLOYING TEACHERS AS ITS ELECTORAL STAFF!!!.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) cannot continue justifying its decision to employ Teachers as its Electoral Staff, this is done in the face of high levels of unemployment confronting this country.
That is not the only reason that the IEC cannot continue with this unjust action, the other reason is that majority of these Teachers are members of a trade union named the South African Democratic Teachers Union(SADTU) which is affiliated to a trade union federation Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) and COSATU is in Alliance with the governing party the African National Congress(ANC).
Now let us dedicate this paragraph to the first reason which concerned with the high unemployment in the country.
It is an insult that the Independent Electoral Commission sees absolutely nothing wrong with employing teachers(people who are already employed and are earning a salary every month) over the millions of scores who are unemployed and are languishing in poverty. There may be no law or legislation in place which prevents the Independent Electoral Commission from employing teachers as its staff, but we do not need a law or legislation to tell us that this action by the IEC is morally wrong and cannot be justified in any way. Those teachers who see nothing wrong with them working as the IEC staff and earning what one could define as double dipping (earning 2 salaries) at the expense of the millions who are unemployed and are languishing in poverty and are unable to earn a living. This talks to the moral bankruptcy which has eaten away at the moral fiber of our society.
The second reason is concerned with the political and credibility implications of the actions of the Independent Electoral Commission. The employing of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) which is an affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) that is an Alliance partner of the governing African National Congress(ANC) raises the aspect of the conflict of interests. It was in November 2023 during the first of the two IEC weekend voter registration when SADTU released a communique directed to its members to come closer to the ANC different structures as part of the elections work, on the flipside you have the members of the very same SADTU serving as electoral staff of the IEC. If that is not a conflict of interests then I do not know what it is.
This action is jeopardizing the credibility and integrity of the election processes and the outcomes.
As South Africans we have a duty to defend the credibility of the election process and need to force the IEC to abandon this moral act.
In conclusion , I have proven in the above paragraphs that the Independent Electoral Commission has no leg to stand on when it comes to its decision to employ teachers as its electoral staff.
This cannot continue, it has to come to an end!.
