WHY DO SOME MEN FIND IT SO EASY TO DENIGRATE WOMEN?

One of the saddest things one can come across in the social media platforms such as Facebook and X(formerly Twitter) is the denigrating posts or messages directed to women. In majority of cases the authors behind such posts are men, such kind of behavior leaves one with lots of unanswered questions. These men find it so easy to call women all sorts of denigrating names or make use of the women's private parts as a weapon in whatever argument or fight they are engaged in, words such as "Msunu" are now a currency. Such things would be said and people would claim to be joking, but what kind of a joke that dehumanizes other people, jokes that impugn on the dignity of other people. We must really be a sick society which derives fun from impugning of people's dignity. We must pause and begin asking ourselves difficult questions about the kind of society we envision , the type of society we want our children and grandchildren to inherit.

It is us Men who are always at the forefront of attacks against women on these social media platforms. One wonders why would people who were raised by women now turn around and lead the attack against the same people who carried them for 9 months, looked after them when they were toddlers?. Who taught us Men to treat and disrespect women the way we do, is it the society which has instilled this dangerous and backward type of thinking?. Are we as Men doing enough to call each other out on such things?.Whenever one or two men speak out and call out fellow men who are perpetuating this harmful way of thinking they are quickly dismissed as having been bewitched(Badlisiswe), they are allowing women to dance on top of their heads, that is the accusation leveled against them. It then compels us to ask a deeper question of what exactly defines a man?. What standards have we set for men?

If these harmful practices are not challenged then we will be failing the next generation of men ,but not just men the whole of society. Who are the young men/boys supposed to look up to as models for what a real man should look like?. I am of the view that more of us Black Men need to start speaking out against our fellow Black Men and this is in no way suggesting that myself as an author of this piece I've got no limitations of my own. The issue at hand is not who is perfect or who is not, NO it is about the effort to improve for the betterment of our society.
