SHOULD PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA FIRE MINISTER NKABANE?
The Minister of Higher Education Dr Nobuhle Nkabane has been on the news lately for all the wrong reasons. She appeared in the Parliamentary Committee for Higher Education just above a month ago, it is in this committee where she was taken to task about her decision to appoint a number of individuals into the boards of SETAs. These individuals were not being appointed as ordinary members of the boards but they were being appointed as Chairpersons to these SETA boards. Now , someone who may be hearing or reading about this for the first time may want to ask a question "what is wrong with these individuals being appointed as Chairpersons to the SETA boards?", well these individuals are cadres of the co-governing African National Congress(ANC) and their appointment would have signaled the highest form of blurring of the lines between Party and State.
Who are these "individuals"?. One of them is Nomusa Dube she is the former Premier of the KwaZulu Natal province, since the May 2024 national and provincial elections when the ANC lost the elections in KwaZulu Natal she has been out of any formal employment. It therefore explains why the ANC wanted to appoint her as chairperson to one of the SETAs. The ANC lost its majority in KwaZulu Natal as it dropped from above 50% it received in the 2019 elections to a mere 17% in 2024, this meant that a sizeable number of the ANC senior and junior cadres found themselves without jobs. The former premier of KZN Nomusa Dube happens to be one of those people.
Amongst the individuals who were being appointed is Buyambo Mantashe, yes Mantashe. The surname sounds familiar, isn't?. Buyambo Mantashe is a son to Gwede Mantashe the current ANC national chairperson and current Minister of Mineral Resources within the so-called Government of National Unity which is led by the ANC. Buyambo's appointment was seen a a slap on the face of the millions of people(especially the youth) who are unemployed, his "appointment" coincided with the release of the unemployment figures which revealed that the unemployment is worsening in the country.
What made matters worse was the contempt and arrogance the Minister of Higher Education Nobuhle Nkabane treated the members of the parliamentary committee who took her to task for this appointments. She was captured eating and chewing some substance during the parliamentary process, she really appeared unbothered by the concerns that were being raised by members of the committee. It was evident for all to see that to her the whole process was just a box ticking exercise. When pressed on how she arrived at the appointments she then gave a story of an 'imaginary' PANEL which she claimed advised her on the appointments, as expected the members of parliament asked about the identity of the people who constituted this 'advisory panel'.
Her initial response was to refuse to reveal the identity of individuals constituting this 'panel'. Upon being pressed hard and pressured to reveal their identity she then told the public that the 'panel' is headed by one respected advocate by the name Terry Motau SC. It did not take long before Advocate Terry Motau came out to rubbish the claims that he chaired the so-called 'panel'. It was at this stage where the Minister was then compelled to come out and apologize to Advocate Terry Motau . This goes without saying that what Nobuhle Nkabane is doing is of course inline with how the ANC views the state , it views the state as a means for personal accumulation for its leaders. To the ANC the SETAs are just another platform to loot, even if this is done at expense of the youth of this country which is meant to benefit from these SETAs .
President Cyril Ramaphosa cannot justify keeping this arrogant Minister except for self-serving party political interests!
